Design and Technology

What are we aiming for?

At Yardley Primary School we aim to provide a high-quality design and technology curriculum which encourages our pupils to be creative, innovative and resourceful citizens, whilst fulfilling the aims of the National Curriculum.  Through the teaching of design and technology, pupils learn to take risks and solve problems practically by designing and making functional products, developing a critical approach to their own ideas and considering the needs of others. Pupils learn to evaluate past and present design and technology, and build an appreciation for its impact on daily life and in the wider world. Our curriculum provides key learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom, empowering pupils to question and explore all of the opportunities that they are entitled to.

How do we achieve this?

Our design and technology curriculum is delivered through different themed topics taught throughout the year. Each topic has been designed to cover a different design element and allow pupils to build upon their prior knowledge. We use the Design and Technology Association’s Projects on a Page scheme to support our teaching and curriculum design.

Design and Technology in the early years

In EYFS, design and technology is taught through the specific area of learning and development; expressive arts and design. This is delivered through exploration and child-initiated play.
