Stranger Danger Awareness
5th December 2024 | Posted by Yardley Primary School
We have been informed by West Midlands Police about an attempt to abduct a Year 5 child from the Handsworth Wood/Lozells area of Birmingham on 4th December 2024.
Events like these remind us of the importance of ensuring children are aware of “stranger danger,” especially when walking to and from school unaccompanied. We address this in school as part of our safeguarding measures, and today, teachers are reminding children of the basic rules to stay safe:
Never talk to strangers
Always ignore strangers who ask questions or tell you to do something
Avoid walking alone whenever possible
Speak only to trusted adults if you are concerned about anything
As parents and carers, we know you want to stay informed. We would ask you to remain vigilant and should a similar situation arise in our area, we will inform you immediately. We also advise you to discuss these safety rules with your children, especially if they travel to and from school unaccompanied.
Thank you for your support. If you see anything suspicious in the local area, please contact the police and the school. West Midlands Police can be contacted via Live Chat at West Midlands Police between 8am and midnight or by calling 101.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and made this possible.
National Education Nature Park (NENP) Programme
Our Junior Leadership Team (JLT) have been successful in applying for a grant from the Department for Education as part of the National Education Nature Park (NENP) programme. The grant supports young people in getting outdoors and learning about the natural world, as well as enabling schools to make ‘grey to green’ biodiversity improvements.
The JLT started by mapping out areas around the school with little or no wildlife. They then planted some shrubs and flowers to encourage wildlife into these areas. You may have seen some of these changes in our KS1 playground. Watch this space, there are more developments afoot!

Due to recent incidents of trespass on railways in our local area, Network Rail and Learn Live have asked us to share these free safety videos that you can share with your children at home. Over 20 million students, parents and teachers from across the UK have already watched these videos which has led to a significant decrease in the number of fatalities and injuries in their area through watching the safety videos.
There are two videos available, depending on the age of your child. Use the links below to access the videos.
👉 Ages 4 - 7 (Reception/Year 1-2 )
Please note these are the recommended age ranges, you are advised to view the videos first to gauge suitability for your child.

Safer Sleep Week 2024
6th March 2024 | Posted by Yardley Primary School
Safer Sleep Week takes place 11th - 17th March.
Safer Sleep Week is The Lullaby Trust’s national awareness campaign targeting anyone looking after a young baby. It aims to raise awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the simple advice that reduces the risk of it occurring. Greater awareness of safer sleep leads to a decrease in the numbers of babies dying.
Sadly around 3 babies a week still die from SIDS and if all parents were aware of safer sleep advice many lives could be saved. Around 700,000 babies are born every year in the UK and The Lullaby Trust need to continue to reach out to all new parents with their life-saving messages.
