As you will be aware, under Benedict's Law, which came into effect in September 2026, schools are required to minimise the risks of exposure to known allergens.

We have a significant number of pupils in our school with severe allergies which can cause life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and have an Epipen (an adrenalin injection).

All our school staff are trained in allergy awareness and EpiPen use, eating areas are regularly cleaned, and the school caterers have procedures in place to manage allergies at lunchtimes. All pupils with allergies have medical cards and lunchtime routines are designed to reduce the possibility of reactions. These measures will continue.

We are aware that no school can be allergen free, but we are asking parents be allergy-aware when sending food to school. Thought and effort from our whole school community will help to keep everyone safe.

The main allergens that pose a risk to pupils at our school are listed below:

• Nuts

• Eggs

• Milk

• Fish

• Gluten

• Kiwi

• Sesame

• Some other fruits

This is not an exhaustive list, but does cover a majority of pupils who suffer with severe allergies in school.

Many foods have trace nuts, dairy and egg and it would not be possible for all these foods to be avoided in school or in venues outside school. However, in order to support the inclusion of all pupils and reduce the possibility of any severe allergic reaction in school, we would respectfully request that parents refrain from sending pupils to school with:

• Packaged nuts

• Peanut butter or chocolate spreads containing nuts

• Cereal, granola or chocolate bars containing nuts

• Peanut-based sauces like satay

• Sesame seeds

• Egg in its basic form (e.g. egg sandwiches or a whole boiled egg)

• Kiwi in its basic form (e.g. whole fruit or fruit pieces)

We have pupils in school with severe allergies to these foods and who require an EpiPen.

We would also be grateful if you would reiterate the messages we give in school by talking to your children about ensuring they only eat their own packed lunch / school dinner and do not share with others.

Statutory guidance from the DfE supports this approach.

Advocacy groups like The Anaphylaxis Campaign and Allergy UK don’t support a total ban on allergens in schools. This is because:

It is almost impossible to enforce it. Allergens like nuts, sesame, eggs and kiwi are present in a wide variety of products from foods to cosmetics, many of which are not obvious. Allergic reactions can also be triggered by nettles, insect stings, and other substances you can't fully keep out of a school. Many allergens like nuts are also most likely to cause reactions through ingestion or physical contact so the risk of airborne reactions is small.

With the summer holidays just around the corner, children may be looking forward to having more free time.  For many, this may be spent online. 

To help parents protect their children online during the summer, Skips Safety Net have created free digital guides full of simple, practical advice.  They have also provided a simple action plan in case something goes wrong online.

Rising prices can make life's little treats harder to afford, especially during the school holidays when costs build up for families. The Government have now announced the Great British Summer Savings scheme.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, the Government is temporarily cutting VAT from 20% to 5% on children's meals in restaurants, children and family tickets to cinemas, theatres, concerts and exhibitions, and admission to a wide range of attractions. Combined with free bus travel during August for children aged 5 to 15 in England, families and young people will be able to enjoy experiences that make summer special, including visits to the kinds of cultural and educational attractions that enrich children's lives outside the classroom.

Important changes to the Government’s Free School Meal (FSM) eligibility rules will be coming into effect from 1st September 2026.

These changes may affect you, regardless of whether your child currently has Free School Meals or not.

Due to the current weather warnings in place this week, we want to ensure that all children remain safe and comfortable during the warm weather.

Please make sure your child brings the following to school each day:

• A named water bottle

• A named sun hat

• Apply all-day sun cream to your child before they arrive at school, as we are unable to provide or apply sunscreen during the school day.

PE kit or other cool, comfortable clothing can be worn (instead of usual uniform) while the warm weather warning is in place.

What school will do:

• Ensure the school building is ventilated as well as possible

• Keep lighting off where possible to reduce heat

• Encourage pupils to drink water regularly throughout the day

• Limit time spent outside, especially during the warmest parts of the day

• Keep physical activity to a minimum while the warm weather warning remains in place

As we’ve sadly seen in recent weeks, warmer weather brings a heightened risk of drowning.  So, as we head into the summer months, we would like to share top tips for water safety from the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

Their new 'Summer Water Safety' website reveals different risks at different ages and shares practical advice for staying safe at the pool or beach and around rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

It also explains cold water shock, how learning to float can be a lifesaver and what to do in an emergency.

This Summer holiday, Bring it on Brum (Birmingham City Council) are running FREE activity clubs (including lunch) across Birmingham for children who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals.

On Tuesday 10th February 2026 we will join schools and youth settings across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2026.  Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety.  It is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people, and to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively.

Birmingham City Council’s Family Hub programme funds local access to Togetherness, enabling parents and carers to benefit from high quality NHS developed emotional health and wellbeing content at no cost.

Togetherness is an online learning platform created by psychologists and health practitioners. It provides accessible, evidence informed learning designed to support emotional wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and positively influence behaviour.

We are delighted to let you know about an exciting development at Yardley Primary School. We have recently moved to a new Management Information System (MIS) called Arbor, which will help us manage school data more efficiently and improve communication with you.

As part of this change, we now have a new parent portal that will give you secure online access to important information about your child.  To begin with, to make the transition smoother for parents, we will only use this new Arbor parent portal for a few things – lots of things will stay as they are in ParentPay.  Over time, we will introduce more features and gradually aim to bring all of our services in the Arbor parent portal.
